To celebrate his forty years in showbiz, Norman Cook, AKA Fatboy Slim, has dug deep into his capacious archive of photographs, memorabilia, bric-a-brac, awards and art objects to create a big book stuffed with memories. Included here are photos from his childhood, demo tapes, and hand-drawn posters for his imaginary teenage band, flyers, hand-written notes, personal photos and professionally shot images of Norm in each of his various musical guises. There are tales of being a Housemartin, a DJ, clubbing, making it big with Beats International, Freak Power, Pizzaman, Brighton Port Authority and a glittering array of pseudonyms, most famously of course, Fatboy Slim.
This is more than just a book, it’s a hugely evocative celebration of indie, house, acid and remix culture. Across more than 300 pages, photos, flyers and stories take us on a rave through every scene that Norm’s been a big part of since he was fifteen.
Boasting more than 800 images, this is a truly dazzling, almost intoxicating visual party of a book. Inside are original artworks, flyers and posters which Norm has saved since his first band (formed when he was 15 years old). There are scores of photos tracing his passage from boyhood to pop star with The Housemartins, through clubland infamy to world superstar DJ status, many of them previously unseen.
Then there are the stories to go with the photos and items Norm kept in his vast archives, sealed in a seaside bunker; among them the boxer shorts which changed his life, the school photo to make a Prime Minister blush, why hundreds of Smileys, and more.
It’s a huge jamboree of a book as befits Brighton's best-known DJ, cafe-owner, and football club director.
